The maintenance isn't that bad unless your riding hard enduro style everytime you're on it. I have a fe501 and do oil changes every 20-25 hours. Didn't check the valves from 50 to 140 hrs and they were still well in spec. I've never had to shim any valves from new. Fuel REcommendations Surprisingly, somehow, the xt is better suited for that. There is a pretty big gap in trail ability between the 690 and 500 though.
